PT Services to Fit Your Health and Wellness Needs
Orthopedics
I have 24+ years of experience as an orthopedic specialist at Georgetown University Hospital. I assess and treat musculoskeletal injuries and imbalances to manage pain, enhance mobility, flexibility, and balance. In some cases, PT can help you avoid surgery by tackling root causes and aiding the healing process. If you do have surgery, I can guide you in rebuilding your strength, range of motion, and overall functionality.
Manual Therapy
As a certified Functional Manual Therapist, I use a hands-on approach to engage your body’s untapped potential to heal. My treatments include joint mobilization, soft tissue manipulation, neuromuscular facilitation, and motor control techniques. The goal is to find the body’s root cause of the dysfunction. I will help you move your body better and reduce your pain so you can enjoy a better quality of life.
Geriatrics
I can work with you to address age-related challenges that can slow you down, such as balance issues, pesky aches, and stiff joints. With the personalized care of geriatric physical therapy, you can rediscover the joys of mobility, reduce the risk of falls, and make every day more comfortable and vital.
Sports Medicine
With my education and training in physical therapy, athletic training, and strength conditioning, I provide a tailored fitness program to meet your rehabilitation or performance goals. Using techniques of current evidence-based exercise science, I will guide you back into action and optimize your athletic abilities.
Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS)
As a certified DNS Exercise Trainer, I employ therapeutic exercises that reset your neuromuscular connections for restoration of proper movement patterns to enhance joint stability and improve overall musculoskeletal function. This rehabilitation approach is based on principles of developmental kinesiology and understanding of how the human movement system develops from infancy.
Personal Training
As a certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and rehabilitation medical practitioner, I create advanced exercise programs designed to help you reach your fitness and wellness goals, while prioritizing recovery and injury prevention. If you have a gym in your residential or office building, I can work with you at that facility or directly in your home.
Dry Needling
I offer dry needling to help you achieve optimal musculoskeletal health. Dry needling involves inserting thin, solid needles into specific trigger points or knots in your muscles, tendons, or connective tissues. It can provide significant benefits, including targeted pain relief, improved muscle function, faster recovery from injuries, enhanced blood circulation, reduced muscle tension, and increased joint mobility. I am certified and have over ten years of experience using this procedure.

FAQ
What’s unique about Uttecht Physical Therapy?
For your convenience, I come to your home, office, or gym to provide you physical therapy services, highly personalized to your needs. Unlike at a busy clinic, I offer you a full hour session. My skills, developed over the past 25+ years, include specialization in orthopedics, neuromuscular therapy, functional manual therapy, athletic training, and dry needling.
What conditions do you treat?
I specialize in orthopedic, sport, and geriatric conditions. For the past 24 years, I have worked as an outpatient PT at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. I have treated clients with issues in the spine, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, foot, and ankle. In many cases, I have helped clients avoid surgery through PT services. Preventative and wellness care is my passion.
Do I need to see a doctor before coming for physical therapy?
No. In the DC metro area you can see a physical therapist for evaluation and treatment without a physician’s referral. If you are looking for coverage through your health insurance, I recommend calling your insurance company to determine your current coverage and requirements.
Do you take insurance or Medicare?
I am an out-of-network provider for insurances that offer out-of-network benefits. This means you will pay for each visit, and then submit to your insurance for reimbursement. I will provide a superbill, if requested, which you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. I will fill out any paperwork that your insurance requests to be completed by the physical therapist. Uttecht Physical Therapy is “non-enrolled” with Medicare. Therefore, clients with Medicare coverage cannot submit for reimbursement.
Why do you not participate with any insurance plans?
My goal is to provide you with a full hour of high-quality, personalized, concierge-level PT services for as long as you need my services. If I participated with insurance plans, I would be limited in the time I could provide each client and burdened with administrative requirements that would restrict my practice.
What is your fee for your services?
Each one-hour PT or personal training session is $200. I may charge a $30 travel fee if your point-of-service site is more than five miles from my location in northwest DC, where I am based. If your insurance provides out-of-network benefits, you will be given a superbill that can be submitted to your insurance for reimbursement for a percentage of the cost of your session.
What is your cancellation policy?
I understand that circumstances arise which cause you to cancel your appointment. However, cancellations have an impact on my time and schedule. If you cancel 24 or more in advance, you will not be charged for a session. If you cancel less than 24 hours before your scheduled appointment, you will incur a $100 cancellation fee. Thank you for your kind understanding of this policy.
Do you serve clients in Maryland or Virginia?
Yes. I am licensed to serve clients in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
What is dry needling?
Dry needling is an invasive procedure in which a thin solid filament needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point. A myofascial trigger point consists of multiple contraction knots, which are related to the production and maintenance of the pain cycle. Dry needling is based on Western medicine principles and research. I am certified and highly experienced to offer dry-needling services.
What is your rate for providing dry needling?
In many cases, a dry needling session will require less than an hour. In those cases, I base the fee on time spent with you. For example, if the session lasts 30-minutes or less, then your fee would be $100, which is my minimum fee.
What should I wear for my session with you?
I recommend clients wear gym clothes such as a t-shirt, athletic shorts or sweatpants. If you have specific questions, please discuss these with me.
Testimonials
Michael Uttecht gave me my life back. When I met Michael, I was wearing a Sacroiliac (SI) belt for joint instability, and although I could walk short distances, I needed a scooter otherwise. Having been athletic, this was a tough situation for me. Michael never gave up on me although other therapists thought that I might always have to wear the SI belt. He expertly analyzed my complex problems and symptoms and assured me that he would do his best to get me back to normal. And he did! I am stable, strong, go for long hikes, and live life fully again. Michael is dedicated in his work, and brilliant in diagnosis, functional manual therapy (including excellent soft-tissue work) and finding the right exercises. He is also kind, patient, and caring. In short, he is unique and the best.

I have been privileged to have Michael Uttecht as my physical therapist for the past ten years. He has successfully dealt with a variety of painful and potentially debilitating issues. Thanks to him I am maintaining good strength, flexibility, and vigor into my eighties. His knowledge of the human body and its dynamics is immense. His therapeutic skills are extraordinary, combining patient delicacy with intensity as the situation may require. The exercise program that he has devised for me is exactly tailored to my needs. In his person he is dedicated, considerate, respectful, and caring: a fine therapist, a fine person.
Michael
Michael Uttecht is a very skilled therapist and quite amazing at analyzing complex problems. He is also a wonderful healer. He inspires me to do my daily exercises. When I feel lazy, I recall his instructions about how important this activity is for my healing, so I hear his voice in my head and that pushes me to do the exercises.

The physcial well-being results I have achieved with Michael’s physical therapy have been extraordinary. He helped me regain a full-range of pain-free motion after a rotator cuff injury. He also helped me through a plantar fascitis condition, relieving my foot pain. He worked with me to improve my breathing by better mobilizing my diaphragm. I am fortunate to have an ongoing relationship with Michael to rehab me and keep me strong, mobile, and pain free. He is positive, provides tailored home exercises that reinforce my hands-on-work, and is a good teacher.
Michael combined dry needling with physical therapy to help me recover from a micro tear in my rotator cuff and also lower back pain from a bulging herniated disk. During the treatments for my rotator cuff injury, he used dry needling to the muscles in my shoulder. He got the right spots, as I had almost instant pain relief. This allowed me to go back to the gym and do light strengthening exercises and other PT training important for healing the rotator cuff. Michael also used dry needling to relieve the pain I had in my lower back. He is great at his craft. The use of dry needling took my treatments to the next level, and sped up my recovery.
Before meeting Michael, I had visited countless practitioners (physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncturists..the list is endless), none of whom could alleviate excruciating and/or debilitating symptoms. Michael expertly and methodically assessed confounding symptoms, leaving me in less pain each time I visited him. For the first time in six years, I’ve been able to play tennis without triggering significant pain.
